How the calculation works
Daily habits are multiplied by elapsed days, while weekly habits are multiplied by elapsed weeks. Each activity is also shown as a share of elapsed lifetime hours. The screen-time scenario converts a daily reduction into annual and five-year time recovered.
Worked example
Two hours of screen time per day is about 730 hours per year, or just over 30 full days. Reducing that input by 20 minutes per day represents about 122 hours, or five days, across one year.
Daily habits, weekly habits, and lifetime totals
Sleep, screen use, and commuting are entered as daily averages. Work or study, exercise, family or social time, learning, and the custom activity are entered per week. The calculator converts both patterns to hours across the elapsed days since birth.
A routine rarely stays unchanged for an entire lifetime. The result answers a what-if question: what total would this average create across the selected period? It does not reconstruct childhood, holidays, unemployment, illness, retirement, or earlier technology use.
Why activity percentages can overlap
Screen time can occur during work, study, commuting, exercise, or social time. A learning activity may also be screen-based, and family time may include travel. Each category is therefore projected independently and can overlap another category.
The activity percentages describe each estimate as a share of elapsed lifetime hours. They should not be added unless the user has deliberately entered mutually exclusive categories. The combined total may exceed 100 percent without being a calculation error.
Turning a time audit into a useful experiment
The screen-reduction field shows annual and five-year time represented by a small daily change. It does not label screen use as wasted or assume recovered time becomes productive; the result can represent sleep, exercise, relationships, focused work, or nothing scheduled at all.
For a practical audit, start with device reports and a normal recent week, use conservative averages, and repeat the exercise with a second scenario. A smaller reliable change is usually more actionable than an inflated lifetime promise.
