What is What's My Zodiac Sign?

A Western zodiac sign calculator answers 'what is my zodiac sign?' by mapping a birth month and day to one of the 12 commonly used tropical sun-sign ranges. The result includes the sign's symbol, element, modality, polarity, ruling planet, and traditional themes. These labels belong to astrological tradition and are presented for entertainment and cultural reference, not as a scientific personality assessment.

How to use What's My Zodiac Sign

  1. Select the month in which you were born.
  2. Select a valid birth day for that month, then choose Calculate.
  3. Read the sun sign and the exact date range used by this calculator.
  4. Review the symbol, element, modality, ruler, and cusp note without treating traditional themes as measured personal facts.

Features

  • Western zodiac lookup using only the birth month and day.
  • Date range, symbol, element, modality, polarity, ruler, and traditional themes.
  • Clear entertainment framing without scientific claims.

How the calculation works

The calculator maps the entered month and day to the commonly used tropical zodiac date ranges shown in the reference table below. It does not calculate the astronomical position of the Sun for a specific time and place.

Worked example

A March 25 birthday returns Aries because it falls within the March 21 to April 19 range used by this calculator. An October 2 birthday returns Libra.

Zodiac signs and dates at a glance

This zodiac sign date chart is the same standard tropical lookup used by the calculator. It also shows the four elements and three modalities used to group the 12 signs.

A birthday on the first or last date of a range is near a cusp. Different published tables or a time-specific chart can place some boundary birthdays differently.

Sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign are different

The result from this calculator is a sun sign, the label most people mean when they ask for a star sign or zodiac sign by birthday. It uses only the month and day because it is a simplified date-range lookup.

A moon sign is based on the Moon's position, while a rising sign or ascendant depends on the eastern horizon at the birth time and place. Those results require a full birth date, an accurate birth time, a location, and astronomical calculations, so this tool does not guess them.

How zodiac cusp dates are handled

A cusp is the boundary between two consecutive sign ranges. This calculator uses the complete date ranges in the table above, so every valid month-and-day entry receives one result and the rule remains easy to inspect.

If you were born near a transition and another source gives a different sign, compare its date convention first. A time-specific astrological chart may also use the birth year, clock time, timezone, and location to place the Sun more precisely than a fixed birthday table can.

Why Ophiuchus is not a thirteenth sign here

The tropical zodiac used in mainstream Western astrology divides the ecliptic into 12 equal signs tied to the seasonal cycle. Ophiuchus is an astronomical constellation crossed by the Sun's apparent path, but it is not part of this traditional 12-sign system.

Astronomical constellations and astrological signs are therefore not interchangeable lists. This calculator identifies a traditional tropical sun sign; it does not claim to identify the physical constellation behind the Sun on a birth date.

Common use cases

  • Finding a Western zodiac sign or star sign by birthday.
  • Checking all 12 zodiac signs and dates in one clear chart.
  • Learning the element, modality, polarity, ruler, and symbol associated with a sun sign.
  • Adding light cultural context to a birthday card, party theme, or conversation.
  • Comparing Western zodiac, Chinese zodiac, and birthstone results without combining their different traditions.

Accuracy and limitations

The month-and-day result is exact for the published date table used by this calculator, but the table is a simplified convention rather than a complete natal-chart calculation. It does not use year, time, location, timezone, or astronomical ephemeris data. Date boundaries can vary near a cusp, and traditional sign descriptions are not scientific findings or grounds for consequential decisions.

Questions, answered

What's My Zodiac Sign FAQ

Specific answers about this tool's method, assumptions, and limits.

Is a zodiac sign calculator scientific?

No. Western astrology is a cultural tradition, and this calculator does not make scientific claims about personality, compatibility, health, or future events. It provides a transparent date-table lookup for entertainment and general reference.

Do I need my birth year, time, or location to find my zodiac sign?

A basic Western sun-sign lookup needs only the birth month and day. Birth year, exact time, and location are needed for a fuller natal chart that attempts to calculate the Sun, Moon, rising sign, houses, and other placements.

What does it mean to be born on a zodiac cusp?

A cusp birthday falls near the date on which one sign range changes to the next. This calculator uses the fixed ranges shown on the page and returns one sign; a full astrological chart may place the Sun differently when year, time, and location are included.

Can this calculator find my moon sign or rising sign?

No. A moon sign requires the full birth date and astronomical lunar position, while a rising sign also depends strongly on accurate birth time and location. A month-and-day calculator cannot produce those placements responsibly.

How many Western zodiac signs are there?

The tropical zodiac used here contains 12 signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each occupies one-twelfth of the traditional zodiac cycle.

Why do zodiac sign date ranges vary between websites?

Most dates agree, but boundary days can differ because simplified tables use conventions and time-specific charts calculate a transition for a particular year and location. Check the published range before deciding that one result is an error.

Are zodiac sign, star sign, and sun sign the same thing?

In everyday English, people often use all three phrases for the Western sun sign found from a birthday. In a full astrological chart, however, the sun sign is only one placement among the Moon, ascendant, planets, and houses.

What do zodiac elements and modalities mean?

Astrological tradition groups signs into fire, earth, air, and water elements, and into cardinal, fixed, and mutable modalities. These categories organize traditional interpretations; they are not scientific measurements of temperament.

Does this zodiac calculator include Ophiuchus?

No. This tool uses the traditional 12-sign tropical zodiac. Ophiuchus is an astronomical constellation on the Sun's apparent path, but it is not a thirteenth sign in the tropical system used for this lookup.

Is my birthday stored when I use the zodiac calculator?

No account is required, and the month-and-day calculation runs in your browser. The tool does not need a name, full birth year, birth time, or location for this result.
