How the calculation works

The calculator subtracts current age from a country-level World Bank life expectancy estimate, then converts the remaining estimate into years, months, weeks, days, and progress. Values were refreshed from World Bank API indicators SP.DYN.LE00.IN, SP.DYN.LE00.FE.IN, and SP.DYN.LE00.MA.IN on 2026-07-07.

Worked example

For a person aged 31 using a population estimate of 79.0 years, the simple remaining-time context is about 48.0 years. The result also converts that interval to months, weeks, days, birthdays, and weekends while keeping the source year visible.

What life expectancy at birth actually means

The World Bank defines life expectancy at birth as the years a newborn would live if the mortality pattern observed for that population and period stayed the same. It summarizes a period life table; it is not a schedule of what will happen to each person born in that country.

A person who has already reached adulthood has survived risks included in the at-birth average. Proper conditional life expectancy needs age-specific survival data, which this simple calculator does not claim to provide.

Country, sex, and data-year differences

Countries publish demographic observations on different schedules, so the latest available year can vary. The selected female and male series mirror the source categories and should not be treated as a complete description of sex, gender identity, biology, or an individual's circumstances.

The comparison with the world value is a comparison of two population indicators from the local data snapshot. It is not evidence that moving countries or selecting another group would change one person's lifespan by the displayed amount.

Life expectancy at birth includes mortality risks across all ages beginning at birth. Remaining or conditional life expectancy asks about people who have already reached a particular age and requires age-specific life-table data. This tool uses the at-birth indicator and labels its subtraction as a simple estimate.

Why can the latest data year differ by country?

International indicators depend on national data collection, estimation, and publication schedules. The local snapshot keeps the observation year beside each result because values from different countries may not describe the same calendar year.

What do the female, male, and total options mean?

They select the corresponding population series published by the World Bank. These statistical categories do not capture an individual's full biology, gender identity, medical history, environment, or lived circumstances.

Why might I already be older than the population estimate?

A population average is not a maximum age. Many people live beyond it, while others die earlier. If current age exceeds the selected at-birth average, the tool shows zero simple remaining time and explains that the indicator is not a personal limit.
